I’m Luria Founou, a passionate microbiologist and researcher who always thought NGS Data Analysis and Bioinformatics were reserved to few gifted people. As a young researcher in Cameroon, I felt the burning desire to make a difference. My work held the promise of breakthroughs, but I was trapped. Limited resources, the pressure to publish in journals beyond my reach, and the lack of specialized skills in areas like Bioinformatics and NGS Data Analysis held me back. It was not just about resources; worst of all, I felt alone, unsure where to find the guidance I craved.
Doubt gnawed at me. Was I destined to fail because of where I was born? But deep down, I couldn’t abandon my passion and bioinformatics was my motivation to reach it. With unwavering determination, resilience, hard-work and the help of scattered but invaluable international mentors, I pushed forward. I refused to let my dreams die.
Yet, with each hard-won step, I couldn’t forget the brilliant colleagues I saw give up under the same pressures. Africa was not lacking talent – it was lacking a tailored support system, a way for scientists to access the latest techniques, bioinformatics tools, and mentorship that understood our unique landscape.
